محققان براي كشف حفره‌هاي امنيتي نرم‌افزاري خواهان دريافت پول هستند

امروزه تنها ستايش شركت‌هاي نرم‌افزاري از محققان امنيتي كه حفره‌ها را در برنامه‌هاي كامپيوتري مهم كشف مي‌كنند، ديگر كافي نيست و آن‌ها خواهان دريافت پول هستند

با وجودي كه مخالفان اظهار مي‌كنند كه فروش حفره‌هاي امنيتي كشف شده به جاي اطلاع دادن مستقيم به فروشندگان نرم‌افزار، سلامت تحقيقات را به خطر مي‌اندازد اما برخي شركت‌ها براي چنين اطلاعاتي پول پرداخت مي‌كردند كه بسته به اهميت حفره كشف شده بالغ بر صدها يا هزاران دلار بود به طوريكه ماه گذشته نيز يك سايت مزايده‌ي سوئيسي براي تشويق به مزايده‌گذاري اين اطلاعات راه‌اندازي شد

فروشندگان نرم‌افزار تاكنون از خريد اطلاعات خود خودداري كرده و مايل به تشويق اخاذي نبوده‌اند و محققان نيز تهديد كردند تا زماني كه مبلغ مورد نظر خود را دريافت كنند به فروش اطلاعات خود به مجرمان اقدام مي‌كنند

بدين ترتيب بازار سياهي براي تجارت اطلاعات در مورد آسيب‌پذيري‌هاي نرم‌افزار شركت‌هاي مايكروسافت، سيسكو سيستم و فروشندگان محصولات مهم ديگري‌ كه در كامپيوترها كار مي‌كنند و اطلاعات را بر روي اينترنت ارسال مي‌كنند، ايجاد شد

اين اطلاعات مي‌تواند براي نفوذ به سيستم‌هاي نگهدارنده‌ي شماره‌هاي كارت اعتباري قرار بگيرد يا به طور مخفيانه نرم‌افزار جاسوسي را در شبكه شركت قرار دهد

بنا بر اظهار كارشناسان، سازمان‌هاي دولتي آمريكايي نيز چنين اطلاعاتي را خريداري مي‌كنند اما نه براي هشدار دادن به مردم بلكه براي نفوذ به كامپيوترها براي امنيت ملي يا تحقيقات جنايي و شركت امنيتي مانند (آي ديفنس) در اعطاي جايزه به محققاني كه اطلاعات آسيب‌پذيري‌ها را به اطلاع آن مي‌رساندند، پيشرو بوده است

در هر دو مورد، شركت‌هاي امنيتي اطلاعات را خريداري كرده و سپس براي اجتناب از فاش شدن حفره‌ها به طور عمومي‌ تا قبل از طراحي شدن يك وصله با شركت‌ها همكاري مي‌كنند

با اين حال محققان همواره اطلاعات خود را به طور رايگان به اشتراك گذاشته‌اند و تاكنون ميزان تحقيقات فروخته شده در مقايسه با مواردي كه مستقيما در اختيار فروشندگان قرار گرفته يا توسط كارمندان اين فروشندگان كشف شده اندك بوده اما نشانه‌ها حاكي از رشد بازار فروش آسيب‌پذيري‌هاي كشف شده است

بروز اشكال در نرم افزار موسيقي ويندوز

شركت مايكروسافت روز پنج شنبه اعلام كرد كه اين شركت نرم افزار رفع عيبي براي يكي از برنامه هاي جانبي ويندوز تهيه كرده است

در اين برنامه به حمله كنندگان امكان مي دهد تا كنترل كامپيوتر قرباني را در دست بگيرند

در اين صورت شخص مهاجم مي تواند به حذف پرونده ها, ‌‏جستجوي ضبط شده ها, ارسال نامه و حتي حمله به كامپيوتر ديگر دست بزند

اين مشكل شامل نحوه برخورد يك فناوري در نرم افزار راهنماي ويندوز براي پخش فايل هاي صوتي تصويري با فايل هاي ميدي ميشود

مثلا يك مهاجم مي تواند با ساخت يك فايل ميدي و با ارسال پست الكترنيكي يا ارائه آن در پايگاه وب و يا شبكه هاي اشتراكي به قرباني حمله كند

در صورتي كه كاربر فاقد نسخه جديد نرم افزار ارسال نامه يا نرم افزار امنيتي باشد، با باز كردن اين فايل كامپيوتر آلوده مي شود

اين حمله حتي مي‌‏تواند سبب خطاي نرم افزارهاي ويروس ياب شود و به علت اين كه اين ساختار فايل امن به نظر مي رسد، حتي در هنگامي كه اشخاص در پاي كامپيوتر نيستند نيز مي تواند به تخريب خود ادامه دهد

البته هنوز موردي از اين نوع تخريب گزارش نشده است

Google Adds YouTube Clips to News Site

Matching Yahoo and AOL, who already offer video in their news sites.

Google Inc. has started to provide video clips in Google News, a feature it had been widely expected to add to its article search and aggregation site and which Yahoo Inc. and AOL LLC already offer in their news sites.

"We're showing related news videos along with our news articles to give you a broader spectrum of info available," a Google staffer announced Tuesday in the Google News blog.

Google News is adding the feature through a collaboration with the company's YouTube video sharing site. The clips will come from channels that video news producers have set up on YouTube. Plus, with the YouTube video-playback technology, Google News users will not have to download any clips and they'll be able to view the videos in any browser, according to Google.

"What we're announcing today is a test feature within Google News. We're beginning with a small group of partners who have news content on YouTube and we're starting with a limited amount of content," said Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker in an interview.

"While we're starting out as a test, we hope going forward to access the thousands of content providers who use YouTube to reach a broad global audience, especially those who focus on news," Stricker added.

For now, Google will feature videos in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland editions of Google News. Video providers include CBS, Reuters, and a number of local Hearst TV stations, the company said.

Last May Google News Product Manager Nathan Stoll said that news video was an area the company would "like to make progress in."

"It's true that lots of publishers have asked us about our plans, whether or not we're planning [to include video] because they'd like to get added traffic to their video content. There's certainly a need out there," Stoll told IDG News Service.

Tuesday's announcement fits within the company's larger universal search initiative, which seeks to integrate links from its different engines within search results.

For example, in its main Google.com Web search engine, Google already collates results from its Images, Video, Maps and News specialty search engines, if warranted by the query.

The news videos will play in their entirety right on the Google News page, a different approach from news articles and photos, for which the site only provides headlines, text snippets and thumbnail images. To access an entire article and view photos in their original size, Google News users have to click on over to the site where they appear.

Google indexes articles and photos from the Web without necessarily obtaining permission from their publishers. Although this practice has been challenged in court as copyright violation in the U.S. and abroad by some news organizations, Google maintains that it is protected by the fair use principle. Many publishers actually encourage Google to index their material in Google News because they find they benefit from the traffic the site sends them.

In the case of the Google News videos, the approach is different because the clips have already been uploaded to YouTube by their owners, granting YouTube permission to stream them.

Hands On: Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite

Improved high-def movie playback and bolstered specs--including HDMI--highlight Microsoft's newest version of its popular game console.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite is here, and this version of the sleek game console offers more than just cosmetic improvements. The unit's bolstered specs--such as a 120GB hard disk drive and an HDMI 1.2 connector, perfect for today's high-def TVs--mean more room to store digital content and a better way to view high-definition content.

Though I don't think this update of the current Xbox 360 makes sense for every gamer to upgrade to, the HDMI capability alone makes the Elite a more-appealing option if you're planning on buying your first Xbox. The new console goes on sale Sunday, April 29, and will cost $480, although some sites are charging a premium.

My first impressions of this new iteration of Microsoft's two-year-old game console are generally positive--particularly with regard to the dramatically improved integration of the optional Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, and the improved image quality offered by HDMI (the differences are there, albeit not as striking as one might expect). Basic Black

The Xbox 360 Elite differs from the current Xbox 360 in ways beyond cosmetic finish. Black, however, really can be slimming--even in the context of an inanimate game console. The matte-black Xbox 360 Elite manages to look more svelte than its off-white predecessor.

Looks aren't everything, though. While I can appreciate that the Xbox 360 Elite will blend in better with the rest of my entertainment components, I'm more interested in the unit's bolstered specs and what those new features will let me do. I was also interested to see how the unit handled--especially with regard to high-definition movie playback.

A Mostly Breezy Setup

Initial setup of the Xbox 360 Elite is a snap: You just select the language and then either establish your Xbox Live account or relink to an existing one.

At this point, you can select the High Definition Settings option for choosing optimal audio and video settings for high definition. The console's screen prominently displays this option, and I applaud this design decision, since many users will use the Xbox 360 Elite in conjunction with a high-definition TV. But when I actually chose this option, it moved me directly into the display settings of the Console Settings panel; audio was just one of many console settings I could adjust below that. I had expected to go to a menu that unified the process of adjusting audio and video for high-def.

The menu showed my current, default setting for the display--1080i wide-screen--so I drilled two levels farther down to select the HDTV setting; there, I chose 1080p, to match the resolution of the Pioneer Elite Pro FHD-1 50-inch plasma display I was using. The menu also has an option for selecting screen format; but on the unit I tested, that option was grayed out.

I then returned to the audio settings, to select the digital output. The default setting here was for Dolby Digital 5.1; alternatively, you can choose digital stereo, or Dolby Digital with WMA Pro. The on-screen display warns you that digital audio output is available only through an Xbox 360 Component HD, Advanced SCART, S-Video, or VGA HD AV cable.

Strangely, the menu doesn't mention the HDMI AV cable, which comes bundled with the Xbox 360 Elite. Nor does the unit's setup discuss what kind of audio you can expect to receive over HDMI. (I'm awaiting confirmation from Microsoft of what audio the Elite can support over HDMI.
